PVD stainless steel pipes and tubes

PVD stainless steel tube is ornamental round, square or rectangular tube whose colour sits in a thin, hard ceramic layer bonded to a brushed or mirror surface. It is the material for coloured handrails, balustrades, partition frames, column cladding and facade trims, indoors and out.

About this finish
The tube is finished first and coloured second. A welded ornamental stainless tube is polished to a lengthwise brush grain or a mirror, then goes into a vacuum chamber where a vaporised metal reacts with a process gas and settles on the surface as a thin, hard ceramic compound. The colour belongs to that compound. There is no paint film, so a mirror tube stays reflective under the colour and a brush tube keeps its grain.
The group lists mill, 2B, brush, vibration, hairline and mirror as base surfaces, with colours in gold, light gold, champagne gold, rose gold, copper, bronze, black, blue, purple, pink and green. Because 2B describes the strip the tube is rolled from (EN 10088-2), specify the tube surface by name, brush or mirror, and let ASTM A554, the welded ornamental tube standard, carry the dimensional and weld requirements.

Two choices settle most tube specifications. Brush or mirror: brush hides handling marks and stays even along a long run; mirror reads brighter and shows every fixing. Then the grade: PVD does not change the corrosion behaviour of the steel under it, so a coastal balustrade needs the 316 tube it would have needed uncoloured. The group cuts, bends and fabricates tube to the design; site welds and cut ends expose bare steel, so plan joints on the drawing, not the scaffold.

Care & maintenance
Wipe the tube with warm water, a little neutral detergent and a soft cloth, rinse and dry. On brush tube wipe along the grain. Keep bleach, chloride cleaners, acid descalers, steel wool and scouring pads off the surface; they cut through the layer and scratch the steel.
Handrails collect skin oil; a wipe every week or two keeps them even. Outside, dark tubes in direct sun run hotter than pale ones and external metalwork passes 45 °C in summer, so rinse dust and salt off before it bakes on, and use 316 tube on the coast.

- 01Can PVD coloured tube be cut and welded on site?
- It can be cut, but every cut end and weld exposes uncoated steel, and weld heat marks the colour around it. Have the group cut, bend and fabricate to the drawing where possible, and hide unavoidable site joints inside sleeves or end caps.
- 02Which is better for a handrail, brush or mirror PVD tube?
- Brush, for most handrails. Its grain hides the fine marks a handled rail collects and keeps the colour even along a long run. Mirror suits short, visible features where reflection is the point and the rail is rarely touched.
- 03Does PVD tube rust outdoors?
- The coating neither causes nor prevents rust: corrosion resistance comes from the stainless grade underneath. Inland 304 tube behaves as 304; on the Jeddah or Dammam coast specify 316 tube, exactly as you would for uncoloured rails.
