V-Grooving

V-grooving and folding of stainless steel and decorative sheet for sharp-cornered cladding, column wraps, frames and interiors — the crisp edge ordinary bending cannot give.

Where machine limits are shown they come from the company profile; your material, dimensions and quantity are confirmed on enquiry — you get the measured answer, not an estimate.

A V-groove is cut into the back of the sheet along the fold line, leaving a thin skin of material. When the sheet is folded, that skin closes into a corner with almost no radius — the edge an architect draws, rather than the rounded one a press brake produces. The finished face is never touched, which is why the process suits mirror, hairline and PVD-finished sheet.

What gets V-grooved

  • Column cladding and wraps — sharp-cornered wraps for lobby columns and lift portals, folded to fit the structure on site.
  • Wall panels and cassettes — large decorative panels with folded returns, where a rounded edge would read as a mistake.
  • Door and frame details — architraves, reveals and frame profiles in finished sheet, folded to a crisp line.
  • Furniture and joinery metalwork — reception counters, display plinths and cladding to joinery, matched to the designer’s drawing.

Why V-grooving

A press brake bends metal around a radius. On a bracket nobody minds; on a lobby column in mirror stainless the eye finds it at once. V-grooving removes material along the fold line so the sheet closes into a true corner, and because the groove is cut from the back, the decorative face arrives untouched. It is slower than plain bending, and it is the right process for a smaller set of jobs — the ones where the corner is the detail the client will look at.

From your file to a folded panel

  1. Send your drawing — elevations and sections; DWG, DXF or PDF, with the finish named.
  2. We confirm material and layout — grade, thickness, finish, and how the panel breaks into pieces for handling and installation.
  3. Grooving and folding — the fold lines are grooved from the back, the panel is folded and the corners are checked.
  4. Downstream, if you need it — welded returns, protective film, PVD or polishing on the same order.

Frequently asked

01When should I choose V-grooving over bending?
When the corner itself is on show. For brackets and enclosures, bending is faster and cheaper; for finished cladding with a sharp arris, V-grooving is the right process.
02Does V-grooving weaken the panel?
The groove leaves a thin skin at the fold, so the folded corner is supported by welded returns, a backing frame or bonding to a substrate where the design calls for it. We’ll say what the panel needs at enquiry.
03Can you work in finished sheet?
Yes — that is the point of the process. Hairline, mirror and PVD-coated sheet are grooved from the back with the face protected.
04What thicknesses can be V-grooved?
It depends on the material and the finish. Send the grade, thickness and finish with your enquiry and we’ll confirm.
05Can you supply the sheet as well?
Yes. The sheet, the finish, the grooving and the folding can all be one purchase order.
