Theoretical weight is nominal length × width × thickness at reference density: a 3000 × 1500 × 2 mm 304 sheet computes to 72 kg. Actual weight is what the scale reads after the mill rolled to its thickness tolerance, above or below that figure. Plate is commonly invoiced on theoretical weight, sheet on actual; the quotation states which.

A nominal 2 mm cold-rolled stainless sheet arrives inside the thickness band its standard allows around 2 mm; hot-rolled plate carries a wider band. EN 10259 and ASTM A480 set the sheet bands, EN 10029 the plate bands, by thickness range and, where offered, tolerance class. The purchase order fixes which applies; without that line the mill's default governs.

316L is the floor for a desalination plant, not the answer. At specification-minimum chemistry its PREN is 22.6; duplex 2205 reaches 34.14 and super duplex 2507 37.74. Intake and product water can sit on 316L. High-pressure reverse osmosis trains and brine lines move to duplex and super duplex as chloride, temperature and crevice geometry rise together.

The designation names the process, and the process predicts the behaviour. 2B and BA are mill finishes, cold rolled and annealed, BA the brighter. No. 4 and hairline are polished with a directional grain. Mirror is buffed to a reflective plane. Choose by how the surface will scratch, fingerprint, clean and take PVD where it is going.

Open area is the share of a perforated sheet that is hole, and two numbers fix it: hole size and pitch. Round 5 mm holes on an 8 mm straight pitch give 30.68 %; the same holes on a 60° staggered pitch give 35.43 %, about 15 % more. Unperforated borders and margins bring the whole-sheet figure down.

Under EN 10204:2004, a 3.1 certificate is the mill's own statement of specific inspection on the material it delivered, signed by its authorised inspection representative, who is independent of production. A 3.2 certificate adds validation by an independent inspector or the purchaser's representative. Most orders need 3.1; ask for 3.2 only when the specification demands it.

Laser gives the finest edge on thin and medium sheet and cuts it fastest. Waterjet cuts almost any material, thick or thin, with no heat-affected zone, slowly and at a higher cost per metre. Plasma is the economical route through thick carbon steel where the edge will be welded or machined. Thickness, material, edge requirement and quantity decide.

When aluminium and stainless steel touch with moisture between them, the aluminium corrodes first: it is the anode, the stainless the cathode. Coastal humidity and airborne salt in Jeddah and Dammam supply the electrolyte. The fix is isolation, not avoiding the pairing: a barrier at the joint, sleeved fasteners, and keeping the aluminium large relative to the stainless.

Carbon steel is cheaper to buy and dearer to keep. Under Gulf sun, sand and coastal chloride a painted or galvanised frame needs recoating on a cycle, and every cycle costs access, downtime and labour. Stainless costs more once and is then left alone. Design life and access decide which is cheaper; for much structural work carbon steel wins.

304 stainless steel does not rust the way carbon steel does. Within reach of the Red Sea or the Gulf it tea-stains, a brown surface discolouration left by chloride deposits, and at crevices and rough surfaces it can pit. The cure is grade, surface finish and washing together, not a grade change on its own.
