Metal Surface Area Calculator

Choose the geometry, enter the dimensions in millimetres, and read the surface area in square metres. Surface area is what a PVD, polishing, painting or anodising quotation is priced on, so this is the figure to bring to a finishing enquiry.

Surface area

What this calculates

Finishing processes are bought by the square metre, not the kilogram. A PVD chamber, a polishing line and a paint shop each cost by the area they treat, so before a quotation can be written the surface of the part has to be known. This page returns that number for the five geometries that cover most sheet, plate and tubular work.

Plate one face is for a panel finished on the show side only. Plate both faces is for a sheet finished front and back, edges excluded. Cylinder or pipe outer surface is the outside of a tube or a handrail; pipe inner surface is the bore, where an internal coating or polish is specified. Closed box sums all six faces of a rectangular block.

No density and no grade are involved. The area of a part does not depend on what it is made of, so the page has no grade select and the result is the same for stainless, aluminium and brass.

Show the formula and a worked example

The formula

  • plate, one face: A = L × W ÷ 10⁶
  • plate, both faces: A = 2 × L × W ÷ 10⁶
  • cylinder / pipe outer: A = π × OD × L ÷ 10⁶
  • pipe inner: A = π × ID × L ÷ 10⁶
  • closed box: A = 2 × (L × W + L × H + W × H) ÷ 10⁶

Dimensions in millimetres, density ρ in kg/m³ — as the engine runs them.

A plate face is L × W; both faces are 2 × L × W. A pipe's outer surface is its circumference times its length, π × OD × L, and the inner surface is the same with the inside diameter. A closed box is 2 × (L × W + L × H + W × H). All dimensions are millimetres and the engine divides by 10⁶ to report square metres.

The plate calculations leave out the edge faces. On a 3 mm sheet they are negligible; on a 50 mm plate they are not, and a finisher will add them when the edges are in scope. State it on the enquiry.

Every dimension has to be greater than zero. The engine refuses a zero or negative value with a message rather than printing zero area.

Frequently asked

01Does the area include the edges of a plate?
No. Plate one face and plate both faces count the flat faces only. For thick plate where the edges are finished, add L × T and W × T for each edge to be treated, or state "edges included" on the enquiry and the quotation will allow for them.
02How is a perforated panel priced for finishing?
By its gross area, usually, because the finish still has to cover the hole walls and the whole sheet passes through the process. Give the panel size and the perforation pattern; the finisher decides the basis.
03What does a PVD quotation need besides the area?
The material and its current finish, the colour or coating specified, the number of pieces, the biggest single piece (it has to fit the chamber) and any faces to be masked. The area sets the price band; the rest sets the batch.
04Can I calculate the area of an angle or a channel?
Not directly on this page. Unfold the section into flat faces and add them up with the plate one face calculation, or send the section size on the enquiry and the estimator will do it from the drawing.
