Sheet / Plate Weight Calculator
Length, width, thickness and grade. The engine returns the weight of the sheet and the weight per square metre, at the grade's density, with the density it used named beside the result.
Sheet / plate
What this calculates
One sheet or plate: length × width × thickness at the density of the grade you choose. The second readout, kilograms per square metre, is the same thickness and density with the area taken out, which is the figure most buyers use to compare thicknesses across a job.
The grade list is the full density table — carbon and stainless steels, aluminium, copper alloys, nickel alloys, titanium and the rest — grouped by family. A named grade uses its own density; a generic family entry uses a typical value and the page says so.
For a stack, multiply the single-sheet result by the count; the enquiry form has a quantity field for exactly that. The weight is theoretical: nominal dimensions, no rolling tolerance, no mill over-rolling. The quotation confirms the figure that goes on the order.

The formula
- W = L × W × t × ρ ÷ 10⁹
- kg/m² = t × ρ ÷ 1000
Dimensions in millimetres, density ρ in kg/m³ — as the engine runs them.
Sheet weight is volume × density. Length × width × thickness in millimetres gives cubic millimetres; multiplying by density in kg/m³ and dividing by 10⁹ converts to kilograms.
Weight per square metre drops the length and width: thickness in millimetres × density in kg/m³ ÷ 1000. A 2 mm stainless sheet at 8000 kg/m³ is therefore 16 kg/m² whatever its cut size.
Worked example
| Shape | Sheet / plate |
|---|---|
| Length | 3000 mm |
| Width | 1500 mm |
| Thickness | 2 mm |
| Material grade | 316 |
| Density | 8,000 kg/m³ · grade density |
| Theoretical weight | 72 kg |
| Per square metre | 16 kg/m² |
Computed by the calculation engine from these inputs at render time, rounded only for display.
Frequently asked
- 01Is the result the weight I will be invoiced for?
- No. It is the theoretical weight from nominal dimensions. Plate is commonly invoiced on theoretical weight and sheet on actual weight, and the mill's tolerance moves the actual figure either way. The quotation states which basis applies.
- 02Why is there a kg/m² readout?
- Because it depends only on thickness and grade. It lets you compare a 1.5 mm and a 2 mm option, or a 304 and an aluminium option, without re-entering the sheet size.
- 03What does "family typical value" under the grade mean?
- You chose a generic family entry, so the engine used the family's typical density rather than a specific grade's. Pick the named grade once you know it; the result may move by a percent or two.
- 04Does the calculator handle plate as well as sheet?
- Yes — the formula is the same; the words only mark the thickness range. Enter any thickness in millimetres.
