316L sheet weight chart

Theoretical weights for 316L sheet, calculated at 8000 kg/m³ — the density published on the 316L data sheet. Thickness down the side, sheet size across the top.

316L sheet weighs 8.00 kg per square metre for every millimetre of thickness. A 1219 × 2438 mm sheet at 2 mm thick weighs 47.55 kg.

Sheet sizes in millimetres, width × length. Each figure is one whole sheet; the first column is the weight of one square metre at that thickness.

How the figure is calculated

Both columns run the same two formulas as the calculators on this site, at full precision — the figures are rounded only where they are printed.

Sheet weight (kg) = length (mm) × width (mm) × thickness (mm) × density (kg/m³) ÷ 1,000,000,000

Weight per square metre (kg/m²) = thickness (mm) × density (kg/m³) ÷ 1,000

The density used throughout is 8000 kg/m³, the value published for 316L.

Worked through for one sheet at 1219 × 2438 mm and 2 mm thick: 2438 × 1219 × 2 × 8000 ÷ 1,000,000,000 = 47.55 kg.

Theoretical weight, and what governs

Every figure here is theoretical mass from nominal dimensions. Delivered sheet runs to the thickness tolerance of the standard it is made to, and a sheet cut from coil varies in length as well, so actual weight falls either side of the table. The mill test certificate governs what is delivered and the weighbridge ticket governs what is invoiced.

Common questions

01How much does a 2 mm 316L sheet weigh?
A 1219 × 2438 mm sheet of 316L at 2 mm weighs 47.55 kg, which is 16.00 kg per square metre. That is a theoretical weight from nominal dimensions; the mill test certificate governs what is delivered.
02What does 316L sheet weigh per square metre?
8.00 kg per square metre for every millimetre of thickness, so 316L at 2 mm is 16.00 kg/m². Multiply 8.00 by the thickness in millimetres for any other gauge.
03What is the density of 316L?
8000 kg/m³. That is the figure behind every weight on this page, and it is what makes 316L 8.00 kg per square metre for each millimetre of thickness. That figure is published by Outokumpu / stainless technical resources.
04How do you calculate the weight of a metal sheet?
Multiply length, width and thickness in millimetres, multiply by the density in kg/m³, then divide by 1,000,000,000 to get kilograms. For 316L the density is 8000 kg/m³.
05Are these 316L weights exact?
No — they are theoretical weights from nominal dimensions. Real sheet runs to the thickness tolerance of its standard, so delivered weight falls either side of the figure shown. The mill test certificate governs.

These are the sizes and thicknesses flat product is conventionally made and quoted in, published so the weight can be looked up. Nothing here states what is held in stock — availability in any grade, size or thickness is confirmed on enquiry.
